The International Coffee Organization (ICO) is making good progress with the strategic assessment on which it embarked last year. A document containing the findings of the strategic review will be considered at the 117th Council Session of the ICO in September 2016.
When the concept of a strategic review or ‘strategic assessment’ was first mooted, the ICO members behind the idea said their aim was to “sharpen the strategic focus and relevance” of the organization and provide the secretariat “with guidance to ensure that the decisions and work undertaken by secretariat staff contribute to achieving the strategic targets in clearly defined time-frames.” They also aimed to strengthen the ICO, so that the organization’s resources would be efficiently allocated, target the priorities of member countries, and pave the way for a successful future. Since then, a working group has been hard at work coordinating the strategic assessment and determining its terms of reference. As of March 2016, it had met five times.
